Hello. I love music. I love singing, particularly songs steeped in emotion. In 2011 I started singing intimate stories about life’s complexities. I didn’t set out to write such songs, but those are the one’s I have written. I didn’t write them in the anticipation that anyone would listen to them, but I have been touched and delighted that people do listen.
I am influenced by many different musicians and styles of music. The great jazz singers are a constant inspiration as are creative, individual, fearless artists like Kate Bush, Amy Winehouse and Bjork. The words are the heart of my songs but the music is equally vital; every scorching piano chord, poignant cello, slinky bass and lush harmony is integral to the whole. The songs would not exist without the talented pianist and producer Joe Davison at Auburn Jam Music who has nurtured my songwriting and brings a craftsmanship to production that I deeply admire.
In 2012 I posted some songs on SoundCloud and was amazed at the response. I am so grateful to the fellow musicians, music podcasts and promoters that have supported my music. Encouraged I entered some songs into the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest and was delighted that two, ‘The Time Travelling Wife’ and ‘Lost Cause’ made the finals.
One of my most popular songs on Soundcloud is a version of the classic My Funny Valentine, which is the title track of my 2013 debut EP. I also released ‘Can’t Clip My Wings‘ in 2014, an album of original songs and jazz covers of songs by Sade, Kate Bush and Kaiser Chiefs, which was launched at The 606 Club in London, with my three-piece band, Joe Davison, Dave Holden and Stuart Mann.
I am also Professor of Human Genetics at the Institute of Cancer Research and Head of the Cancer Genetics Service at the Royal Marsden Hospital. My group identifies genes that cause cancer and uses them to help cancer patients and their families.
Thank you all. I so appreciate you listening.
